A couple of weeks ago at work I was lifting up a crate full of nails, screws, and cable staples, when I felt a "twinge" in my lower stomache/groin area. I never really thought too much about it at the time, but as time went on, it got worse. So I decided to head to the doctor to check it out.
Dr. Raphael had a look at me, and wasn't too sure what was going on, but figured I had a hernia, or something like it. To make sure, I was referred to an ultrasound clinic to see what was going on inside.
So off I went to get my first ultrasound! That whole situation was pretty foreign to me... So I just laid on the table, and let the lady squirt goo on me, and rub me down. I didn't know what the hell was going on. I could only see her face as she was doing the examination, and some of the expressions she had didn't sit too went with me. There was a couple "What the hell is that?!" looks, and the odd "Man, this guy is seeexy" HAHA. But she did her thing, I de-goo'd and went on my way. Then last week I had a follow up with Dr. Raphael to see what was up.
It turns out that I don't only have one hernia, but two. One on the left, one on the right. I have bilateral hernias of "moderate size" extending down into my groin area... I was shocked.
Julian explained that these aren't that uncommon, especially among younger children and elderly men. However, I am an exception. It turns out I've most likely had these all my life, but didn't know about them. My condition is caused from me being born premature. (That keeps biting me in the ass...) He explained that there are two weak spots in the lower abdomen where, when you are developing while you are a baby, the testicles come down through from the stomache. They pass through these two spots, and eventually settle in the scrotum. The two gaps are suppose to close up after they pass, but in my case, they did not. Being born premature, those gaps never closed, and hernias developed and filled them. Don't get the wrong idea here... EVERYTHING up to that point went perfect... The
boys are fine. Allll good... Anyway, I grew up with them, and they went undetected until last week... when I exerted myself too much in the wrong way, and symptoms developed.
We talked it over a bit and determined that the best course of action is to get them repaired. Mr Widdifield is getting "Hern Surg".
I got yet another referral to "the best hernia surgeon in Alberta" - Dr Herbert. So off my Dad and I went on the 31st to my consultation. We met with my surgeon, and he explained the what/how/where/how long and so on. He will be making 3 incisions - One under my bellybutton, and 2 on each side on that. An endoscope will be inserted to have a look around, then a surgical mesh will be put in place over the two openings... Sew me up, and call it a day. By using the mesh, it decreases healing time by weeks, so that's a plus.
He said it is a very straight forward procedure, with minimal risks... but I'm still slightly concerned about it. I have to go completely under for the surgery, and they will be working never close to
things I hold dear... if you know what I'm sayin'. And it's surgery - Shit can go wrong... I watch too many medical dramas and it's freaking me out... So I am a little put-off by the whole situation.
Anyway, I can only hope all goes well, and believe I'm being
looked after. I go for Pre-Op on the 13th, and have the surgery on the 18th of June.
PS: Thoughts, prayers, donations are welcome! ;)
